Highest or Lowest Number!

I'm linking up with What the Teacher Wants fabulous linky party on Behavior Management! I must say, as much as I love my new little babies, I've got a bit of a more challenging group this year than I've had in the past (we're talking a cheese stick flushed down the toilet on the second day of school. Joy.)  Soooo ... I am LOVING all of the awesome behavior management tips you wonderful teachers are sharing!

I'm not going to go into detail on my behavior management plan, but thought I'd share a quick little trick I like to use during transitions. This seems to be the most difficult thing for my kids. If I need even a minute to pass out papers or pull up something on the Smart Board, they go a little nutso on me! To avoid time wasted regaining their attention, I've been using this trick: I tell the kids to count as high as they can in their heads. When I'm ready, I tell them to freeze! On a sticky note, I secretly write either "higher" or "lower". I then Call on two kids sitting nicely in their seats to tell me what number they made it to. I show the sticky, and depending on what I wrote, we decide which number wins! That child gets a sticker, skittle, or other small treat. So simple ... But I swear they love it!

And ... If you haven't heard of this little gem, CHECK IT OUT!

Finally, I just found this from Jen at Hello Literacy ...

If you have a microphone connected to your computer, this website will monitor your class's noise level!  LOVE!  One component of my behavior management system involves two jars of marbles.  If the class is working well together as a team, they get marbles moved from one jar to the next.  When are the marbles are moved, we have a class celebration.  I will take marbles away, though, if it gets too noisy or the class as a whole is not following directions.  I'm thinking ... marbles lost if the arrow ever hits red?  Maybe orange?  I can't WAIT to try this out on Monday!!

Happy Weekend!
